Utah Newspaper

Definitely the most famous "newspaper" in Utah is the Newspaper Rock. The Newspaper Rock is located in eastern Utah, and it proves at least 2000 years of human existence in the area. The rock is a petroglyph panel etched in sandstone, and although it is not evidently clear what the petroglyphs mean, they are typical for many other sites throughout the U.S. Newspaper Rock can be conceived as an ancient form of a newspaper, recording events in the daily lives of people who lived thousands of years ago.

The Salt Lake Tribune is Utah’s largest contemporary newspaper. Like the Deseret Morning News, another major Utah newspaper, the paper is based in Salt Lake City, the State Capital of Utah. The Salt Lake Tribune was founded in 1871 as The Mormon Tribune. Some men who disagreed with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints  (LDS Church) viewpoints, decided to take it in their own hands and founded the Utah newspaper to be able to give their own view on the politics and economics of Utah. The main legislation in the State was influenced by the LDS Church, and the newspaper formed a welcome counter-weight to its religious tone.

The newspaper’s name was changed into Salt Lake Daily Tribune and Utah Mining Gazette in 1872, but not too much later it was shortened to The Salt Lake Tribune.
After 1873, the newspaper became anti-Mormon and embraced liberalism. In 1901, the Utah newspaper was bought by Mr. Kaerns, who also was a U.S. senator. Kaerns limited the amount of anti-Mormon texts in the newspaper, and knew how to develop good relations with the LDS state legislature in Utah; after all, the LDS legislature had elected him Senator.

The Salt Lake Tribune stayed in the Kaerns families’ hands until 1997, when it was sold to Tele-Communications Inc. The paper is now owned by the MediaNewsGroup, which is based in Denver, Colorado.
