The Deseret was first published in Salt Lake City on June 15, 1850. It is the oldest daily newspaper in Utah. The newspaper’s name derives from the fact that Utah used to be the State of Deseret. The paper was first published as a weekly. In 1865 it was named the Deseret Evening News, but in 1920 that title was dropped. The name was changed again to Deseret News. After the Second World War, all newspapers in Utah were struggling for their existence. The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News joined together, although both continued publishing their own editorial sections. In 1972, reporter Robert Mullins from the Deseret News won a Pulitzer Prize for local overage of a murder. In 2000, an argument between The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News developed into a real battle which was sometimes fought out in public. The argument was mainly about the Deseret News, which wanted to switch its evening paper into a morning edition. The dispute was solved when the Deseretwas allowed to publish a morning edition and Tribune was sold. The Deseret News changed its name into the Deseret Morning News. Another major Utah newspaper is the Standard Examiner. It was formed when two newspapers merged: The Standard, which was founded in Ogden on January 1, 1888 and The Examiner, which was founded on January 1, 1904. In 1920 both newspapers merged and this is how the Standard Examiner came into existence. The Standard Examiner has been growing fast in the past few decades, which forced the paper to move to larger buildings a few times the last couple of years. The newspapers’ headquarters are still based in Ogden: Read Utah newspapers online: The Salt Lake Tribune www.sltrib.com Deseret Morning News www.deseretnews.com Standard-Examiner www.standard.net Daily Herald www.daily-herald.com The Herald Journal www.hjnews.townnews.com
